Now that we arrived the new year, we are now thinking and setting fitness-related resolutions.

However, most of the time, we fail to accomplish them. The common problem is trying too hard to reach unrealistic fitness goals too quickly.

It is important to set realistic expectations for a reasonable time frame. Take running. Although many look at mileage and time splits as a measure of fitness, it's better for people who have been sedentary for a while to ease into it.

You don't want to run to get into shape; you want to get into shape to run. You have to start by training and cross-training, gentle warm-ups and stretching.

Lower-impact exercises might include biking, swimming and using an elliptical trainer. In addition to starting with lower-impact activities, it's important to increase activity slowly, adding about 10% duration at a time.

However, it is also important to be aware of and acknowledge one's body's limitations.

Pain does not always mean gain. There are a number of warning signs that it might be time to see a doctor, including a traumatic injury, large swelling within the joints, limited range of motion, instability in a joint or any mechanical problems such as catching, locking or popping.

The truth is, exercise is a complicated business and there are a number of things that can affect your success. Knowing what those are will help you set realistic fitness goals and get the most out of your time spent at the gym.

If you have a personal trainer, you can expect them to periodically measure and reassess your progress. This is fundamentally important because when you exercise regularly then you are going to see measurable results. And measurable progress is motivating and highly rewarding.

Do not think of these progress reviews like a performance review at work. This is meant to assess your current fitness level and how your body is reacting to the current cycle of your exercise routine. If your progress toward reaching your goals is not as far along as expected, then you may hear some things you are not ready to hear. Few people like to hear criticism from someone, however, it is necessary to improve in some situations. If you've been following your plan in and out of the gym and it isn't working, then you'll have to reassess the plan and the execution. If you're not following the plan, then the reason for the failure is simple. You need to rededicate yourself or figure out how to avoid the root causes for your inability to adhere to the plan you and your personal trainer put together.

Discussing your fitness goals with your personal trainer lets both of you work out a plan to achieve your overall goals. The assessments should be set up at regular intervals. One month, three months, and six months are common. When one of the intervals is reached, you and the trainer will set down with each other and discuss where you have come, where you have been, and where you are going.

The trainer will guide you through the process. But they will not do your exercises for you. Physical activity is still best accomplished by the individual who most needs its benefits. Once you complete it, you will have a sense of accomplishment and a boost of morale when your trainer is complementing your success.
