If you're working hard in the gym, but still not seeing the results you want—your nutrition could be the missing piece. One of the most common questions we get is:
"Should I count calories or focus on my macros?"
Let’s break it down so you can understand what matters most for your goals.
Calories are a measure of how much energy you’re taking in from food. If you eat more calories than you burn, your body stores the extra as fat. If you burn more than you eat, you’ll lose weight. Simple, right?
Yes—but it's only part of the picture.
“Macros” is short for macronutrients, the three key nutrients your body needs in large amounts:
Each macro contains calories:
So, calories come from macros—but tracking only calories doesn't tell you where those calories are coming from.
Let’s say you eat 2,000 calories a day—but it’s mostly sugar and fat, with little protein. You might be within your calorie range, but your body won't have what it needs to build lean muscle or recover properly from workouts.
At Answer is Fitness, we coach our clients to look beyond just the numbers. Here’s why:
Set your calorie goal – Start by figuring out your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure).
Break it into macros – A common starting point:
(This can shift based on your fitness goals.)
Adjust based on results – Our trainers can help you personalize it based on how your body responds.
If you’re aiming to lose fat, build muscle, or just feel better, tracking macros gives you more control and better results than counting calories alone.
