The holidays are supposed to be joyful—but between packed schedules, late nights, and extra responsibilities, stress and lack of sleep often take over. And believe it or not, both play a major role in holiday weight gain.
When stress levels rise, showing up in work deadlines, family obligations, and constant to-do lists, your body releases more cortisol. This “stress hormone” can increase cravings for sugary and high-fat foods while also encouraging the body to store fat, especially around the midsection. Add holiday treats into the mix, and those cravings become even harder to manage.
Sleep is just as important. Short nights and irregular sleep schedules can throw off hunger hormones like ghrelin and leptin, making you feel hungrier while feeling less satisfied after meals. When you’re tired, workouts feel harder, motivation drops, and quick, convenient food choices become more tempting.
The good news? Small changes make a big difference. Prioritizing 7–8 hours of sleep, managing stress through movement, and staying consistent with workouts can help keep your body balanced during the holidays. Even short workouts, walks, or quick strength sessions can lower stress and support better sleep.
At Answer is Fitness in Canton, MA, we focus on helping you stay strong, energized, and consistent—especially during the busiest time of year. You don’t need perfection this holiday season. You just need smart habits that support your body and fit your life.
