Because February is Heart Health month and this week is Valentine’s Day this is the perfect time to celebrate and care for your heart.
In the U.S. about 12 million people are affected by heart disease, and it is the leading cause of death. While there are several risk factors that lead to heart disease, almost all of them can be controlled by diet and exercise.
What are the risk factors for heart disease you have control over?
Smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity, and diabetes are all of the risk factors that you can control through diet, exercise and lifestyle changes. Creating a healthy lifestyle for yourself can lead to a happier, healthier, longer life.
It is very important to exercise regularly. Regular exercise is the most effective path to eliminating these risk factors. But many people set fitness goals that are too high or that are too intimidating. Remember, daily exercise does not mean running five miles daily. To promote heart health, 30 minutes per day of cardio exercise is sufficient.
